As many of you will be aware, on May 26th 2012, the EU Cookie directive, or EU Cookie law as it is more commonly known, came into effect. The law was designed to make it more transparent to users about what cookies are, and how they are being used by the website they are visiting. However, this may also have a negative impact on the functionality of many websites that are required to implement an acceptable method of ‘implied consent’.

Cookies store information about the actions of a user in previous visits to a site, including how many times they have logged in, which pages they viewed, what buttons they clicked and also the font size, colour scheme and language that they chose to view the website in. Having access to this information is highly important in fully understanding how a page is performing during an online marketing campaign.

Our Solution

Our expert team of web developers and SEO programmers have designed a solution in house, which will greatly reduce the impact the EU cookie law has on your website both in terms of aesthetics and usability.

The solution to the EU Cookie law we have developed places a bar across the top of your website letting users know that cookies are being used. This is a method known as ‘implied consent’, and it is considered to be the most practical form of consent that is compliant with the new cookie law. It will provide the user with a link to your cookie policy page, which details what cookies your website is using, and also another link that provides the user with more information about how they can manage cookies. The header bar can be customised to match the branding, colour scheme and font of your existing website in order to minimise the impact on the aesthetics and usability of the site.

The solution relies on the use of JavaScript, which according to a Yahoo! Developer Blog, 98% of internet browsers have enabled. Once the user has clicked the ‘Close’ button in the header bar, it will disappear and an unobtrusive reminder bar will appear in the footer with relevant links to information on cookies and how to manage them.

Implementation of the AMM Solution
